LANGUAGE
ARTS - 1st
GRADE Top
Integrated
reading, writing, and language development.
Written
language is the best way to record and preserve thoughts, ideas, theories and
discoveries, laws and their interpretations - in short, man's understanding of
God's purpose and force within the universe and all of man's creative
endeavors to express that understanding - in a way which allows them to pass
between friends and colleagues in a small circle or across miles and
generations. As written language
is put on the page, it is meaningful and useful only to those who can decode
it through competent use of reading skills.
The
first grade reading program stresses three elements: (1) Reading is an
immeasurably important skill to an individual as he or she learns how to live
within God's world and to discover God's purpose for him or her within it; (2)
Language skills are designed to prepare children for reading and writing by
providing work on letters and sounds, basic vocabulary, and classification;
(3) Thinking skills are designed to help children develop sound skills in
reasoning; to become more focused and systematic in thinking and more eager to
accept intellectual challenges.
